Jerry Shupak Jr. Killed in Tractor-Trailer Crash on Interstate 10 in Caldwell County

Jerry Shupak Jr. ID’d as Man Killed in Caldwell County Crash on Interstate 10 near Luling

Caldwell County, Texas (July 7, 2022) – Authorities have identified the man who was killed last week on Friday in a collision between two tractor-trailers near Luling in Caldwell County.

Jerry Wayne Shupak Jr., 51, died in the crash that happened at around 2:32 a.m. Friday, July 1, on Interstate 10 near the 632 mile marker (U.S. 183), approximately 2.38 miles southeast of Luling.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2013 International truck tractor hauling a trailer was traveling in the right lane of Interstate 10 when its driver activated its hazard flashers to pull over onto the improved shoulder.

A 2000 Peterbilt truck tractor pulling a dump trailer was also traveling in the right lane behind the International truck tractor and hit the trailer of the International.

After the impact, the Peterbilt and its trailer traveled into the center median and overturned before it burst into flames

The driver of the Peterbilt, now identified as Shupak, was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the International truck tractor was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

Motorists were diverted onto U.S. 183 into Luling and back onto Texas 80. As of late Friday afternoon, the lanes of Interstate 10 were reopened back to traffic.

No other details were given.

The crash remains under investigation.
