Jesse Canal ID’d as 1 of 2 Drivers Killed in Smith County Crash on Loop 49 near FM 724

Smith County, Texas (May 26, 2022) – Authorities have identified one of the two drivers who died Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle crash near Tyler in Smith County as Jesse Canal, 30.

The deadly crash happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. on May 25 on Loop 49, just north of FM 724.

According to a press release by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Canal, a resident of Tyler, was driving northbound on Loop 49 in the left lane when he drove on the wrong side of the road in a no passing zone.

Canal’s vehicle ultimately collided with a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Loop 49.

Canal and the other driver were declared deceased at the scene.

A 7-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles sustained major injuries and was taken to a hospital in Tyler. The current condition of the patient is unknown.

Drivers were asked to seek alternate routes.

No further details about the collision were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
