John Stanton Killed, Kelly Smalley Injured in Tractor Crash on FM 54 in Hale County

John Stanton Killed and Kelly Smalley Injured in Hale County Tractor Crash on FM 54

Hale County, Texas (May 26, 2022) – One person was killed and another was injured Wednesday night in a tractor crash in Hale County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened on May 25, on Farm to Market Road 54, east of County Road BB.

DPS said John William Stanton, 72, of Petersburg, was driving a pickup truck along the highway when he tried to pass a tractor but struck a hayrack on the back of the tractor.

Stanton was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The tractor driver, Kelly Gene Smalley, 55, of Petersburg, was taken to UMC in Lubbock with minor injuries.

No other information was provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
