Jose Mendoza Killed, Sebastian Sierra and Pablo Gutierrez Injured in Moore County Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. 287

Moore County, Texas (December 23, 2021) – One person was killed, and two others were injured early Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Moore County, according to the DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 7:15 a.m., December 22, on U.S. 287, about four miles south of Cactus.

DPS said Carlos Garcia, 34, of Gruver, was driving a 2000 Freightliner truck towing a semi-trailer northbound on the highway while Jose Mendoza, 48, of Dumas, was driving a 1995 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck northbound behind the Freightliner truck.

Garcia slowed to turn onto a county road, and Mendoza failed to control his speed and struck the semi-trailer.

Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Chevrolet, Sebastian Sierra, 63, of Dumas, was taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, Pablo Gutierrez, 28, also of Dumas, was taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with serious injuries.

Garcia was uninjured in the crash.

All four individuals involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating the crash.
