Liza Cavazos Killed and Santiago Tapia Seriously Injured in Edinburg Pedestrian Accident on Owassa Road

Edinburg, Texas (September 8, 2020) – A teenager was killed, and another was seriously injured in a pedestrian accident Sunday night in Edinburg, according to a local news source.

The deadly accident happened around 10:00 p.m., September 6, on Owassa Road between Tower Road and Val Verde.

According to the report, Maricella Escobar, 37, of Edinburg, was driving a blue 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe at a high rate of speed when she struck Liza Cavazos, 15, of Edinburg and Santiago Tapia, 14, of Donna. She also hit a dog.

Escobar continued driving westbound but was later found and arrested.

Cavazos was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tapia was taken to DHR Health in Edinburg with serious injuries.

Escobar admitted to having consumed alcoholic beverages before the crash. She was booked at the Hidalgo County Jail for intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, failure to stop and render aid (resulting in death) and failure to stop and render aid (resulting in serious bodily injury).  

The DPS is investigating the crash.
