LPD Officer Injured in Hit-and-Run Crash on Interstate 27 in Lubbock

LPD Officer Injured in Lubbock Crash on Interstate 27; James Smith Arrested

Lubbock, Texas (June 10, 2022) – An officer with Lubbock Police Department was injured in a hit-and-run accident early Thursday morning on an interstate in Lubbock, according to a report by the Lubbock Police Department.

The crash was reported to the police at around 2:23 a.m. on June 9 in the 5700 block of Interstate 27.

As per the LPD report, James Smith, 38, was driving his vehicle southbound in the main lanes of Interstate 27 when he struck a Lubbock Police Department patrol car that was in front of him.

The impact caused the patrol unit to spin out of control and stop off the roadway of the access road entrance ramp.

The officer sustained minor injuries but was not hospitalized for further aid.

Smith fled the scene but was located by another LPD officer. Smith was ultimately arrested and booked into jail. He was charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid and an outstanding warrant.

No further information was available.

The police are investigating the crash.
