Houston, Texas (March 18, 2021) – A 28-year-old man was killed early Monday morning in a DUI crash in Houston, according to police.

The fatal crash happened around 3:50 a.m., March 15, in the 10300 block of Richmond Avenue at the intersection with the West Sam Houston Parkway service road (Beltway 8).

Police said Joe Nathan Richardson,30, was driving a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck westbound on Richmond Avenue at a high rate of speed when he ran a red light at the intersection and crashed into a gray Toyota 4-Runner that was traveling northbound on the service road.

The force of the impact caused the Toyota to hit a light pole.

Richardson and the Toyota driver were taken to the hospital, where the Toyota driver was pronounced dead.

Richardson was arrested after being released from the hospital and was taken into custody. He has been charged with intoxication, manslaughter, and felon in possession of a weapon.

The police are investigating the crash.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
