Man on Wheelchair Killed in East Dallas Three-Vehicle Crash at Buckner Boulevard and Cordell Drive; Juan Segura-Mendez Arrested

Dallas, Texas (May 16, 2022) – A man in a wheelchair was killed Saturday night in a three-vehicle crash in East Dallas, according to the police.

The fatal crash happened around 10:00 p.m., May 14, at the intersection of Buckner Boulevard and Cordell Drive.

Police said a Chevrolet towing a trailer was heading northbound on Buckner and was turning left onto Cordell. Juan Segura-Mendez, 19, was driving a pickup truck southbound on Buckner at a high rate of speed. A Hyundai was stopped at a stop sign on Cordell while an elderly man in a motorized wheelchair was crossing that street.

As the Chevrolet driver was making the left turn, Segura-Mendez struck the trailer it was towing. The trailer then swung over and struck the pedestrian. The impact caused the pedestrian to collide with the Hyundai.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.

The conditions of the other drivers were not disclosed.

The police are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
