Mayra Ospina Declared Brain Dead after DUI Crash on Barker Cypress Road in Harris County

Mayra Ospina Declared Brain Dead after Harris County Pedestrian Accident on Barker Cypress Road near Coventry Park Drive

Harris County, Texas (January 30, 2020) – One of the three Good Samaritans who were badly injured in a suspected DUI crash Monday morning in northwest Harris County has been declared brain dead, according to the authorities.

The crash happened around 12:40 a.m., January 25, on Barker Cypress Road near Coventry Park Drive.

Deputies said a vehicle had been involved in a wreck on the freeway and other motorists stopped to help. That’s when Zachary Castro, 26, who was driving a Toyota Tundra plowed through the group of Good Samaritans and also hit the stopped vehicles.

Mayra Ospina, 23, and her boyfriend, Luis Ramirez, were outside their vehicle and were hit by Castro. 

Castro first hit Ospina, who was standing next to a car with its hazard lights on and she ended up going over the top of the vehicle and rolled on the hood.

Castro also hit Aron Rosas, who had also stopped to help the stranded motorist.

A total of five vehicles were involved in the crash.

Ramirez sustained multiple injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Ospina was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in extremely critical condition where she was declared brain dead on Wednesday morning.

Rosas was taken to the hospital with broken bones.

Castro was charged with three counts of intoxication assault. He is now facing an intoxication manslaughter charge.

A GoFundMe account was set up to help Ramirez cover his medical expenses.

The crash remains under investigation.
