Officer Sheena Yarbrough Powell Killed and Officer Gabriel Fells Injured in Beaumont Two-Vehicle Crash on Cardinal Drive (Highway 69)

Beaumont, Texas (August 10, 2020) – A police officer was killed, and another was injured in a head-on collision early Sunday morning in Beaumont, according to authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 2:30 a.m., August 9, on Cardinal Drive (Highway 69) near the Highway 347 overpass.

DPS said Luis Torres, 18, of Port Arthur, was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang southbound in the northbound lane of the highway without headlights when he crashed head-on into a northbound patrol vehicle occupied by two Beaumont Police Department officers.

Officer Sheena Yarbrough Powell, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officer Gabriel Fells was taken to a local hospital in serious but stable condition.

Torres was also taken to the hospital.

The authorities are investigating the crash.
