Off-Duty HPD Officer Vidal Lopez Dies Five Days after Houston Train Accident on Fulton Street at Bennington Street
Houston, Texas (December 19, 2022) – The officer who died on Monday, five days after his car was struck by an oncoming train in Houston has been identified as Vidal Lopez, 42. He was working with the Houston Police Department for 20 years.
The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, in the 6700 block of Fulton Street at Bennington Street.
Authorities said a black Jeep Wrangler, driven by Lopez, was attempting to avoid the train by going around another vehicle. Lopez then drove around the crossing gate arms in front of the train tracks, but his vehicle was hit by an oncoming train.
Lopez’s vehicle flipped over onto its side after the crash.
Lopez was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. On Monday, his condition deteriorated and he succumbed to his injuries.
No other details regarding the crash were provided.
The crash remains under investigation.
