1 Killed in Newton County Two-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 87

Newton County, Texas (July 16, 2019) – One person was killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Newton County, according to the DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 2:45 a.m. July 13, on State Highway 87.

DPS said Brycton Hughey, 24, of Kirbyville, was driving a 2012 Chevrolet pickup northbound on SH 87 when for unknown reasons  he crossed the center line and struck a southbound 1996 Chevrolet passenger vehicle head-on.

The impact caused the Chevrolet to catch fire.

The Chevrolet driver was declared dead at the scene.

Hughey was airlifted to Christus Hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
