Harris County, Texas (February 6, 2020) – The family members have identified the three people who were killed in a DUI crash on Wednesday afternoon in Harris County as grandmother Piedad Soriano, daughter Diana Escobar and infant grandson Ricardo Jr. Escobar.

The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, February 5, at the intersection of the North Beltway 8 feeder road and Antoine Drive.

Deputies said Gregory Smith was driving an SUV southbound on Antoine Drive when he ran a red light and hit a vehicle that was heading eastbound on the Beltway 8 feeder road.

The impact caused the vehicle that was hit by the SUV to spin out.

Smith then hit a van occupied by Soriano, Diana, Ricardo Jr., and an 11-year-old. The van caught fire following the impact.

Soriano, Diana and Ricardo Jr., were killed in the crash. The 11-year-old was ejected and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Two people in Smith’s SUV, including an 11-year-old child, were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

One person in the other car that was hit by Smith was not seriously injured in the crash.

Smith has been charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxicated assault.

The crash remains under investigation.

We pass our condolences to the family and friends of Piedad Soriano, Diana Escobar, and Ricardo Jr. Escobar.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol, however, is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.
