Rideshare Driver Struck, Killed by Deputy During Chase on Katy Freeway in Harris County

Rideshare Driver Killed in West Harris County Car Crash on Katy Freeway near Greenhouse Road

Harris County, Texas (August 3, 2020) – An innocent rideshare driver was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a Harris County deputy during a chase in west Harris County, according to deputies.

The crash happened around 1:40 a.m., August 2, in the westbound lanes of the Katy Freeway, near Greenhouse Road.

Deputies said a deputy attempted to pull over a 17-year-old driver for a traffic stop when he refused to yield, and the deputy pursued him.

The suspect’s vehicle then made a U-turn and came back traveling eastbound on the feeder road of the freeway. He made an attempt to get back on the freeway, and there was another vehicle in front of him. The suspect drove around the third vehicle, causing the deputy to rear-end the rideshare vehicle.

The suspect ran across the main lanes of the freeway to the hospital on the other side, after the crash, and he was arrested by an off-duty deputy.

The rideshare driver was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The deputy and the suspect were also taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay.

Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The Harris County, Vehicular Crimes Division, is investigating the crash.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
