Wheeler County, Texas (April 20, 2021) – A man was killed in a motorcycle crash Monday afternoon in Wheeler County near Shamrock, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 4:30 p.m., April 19, at the intersection of FM 1906 and County Road 19.

DPS said Robert Miles, 61, of Shamrock, was riding a 1995 Harley Davidson Motorcycle northbound while a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling eastbound on FM 1906.

Miles failed to yield the right of way to the Hyundai, resulting in a collision.

The force of the impact caused the Hyundai to roll over onto its roof and into the northbound ditch alongside the motorcycle.

Miles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two of the five people in the Hyundai were injured in the crash.

The DPS is investigating the crash.

Most motorcycle crashes are caused by negligent drivers who don’t keep a proper lookout or fail to yield the right-of-way. Because motorcyclists are vulnerable, their injuries are usually severe, often suffering from road rash, broken bones, brain injuries, amputations, or spinal cord injuries. In some cases, the accident results in death.
