Robert Smith Killed in Motorcycle Accident on FM 751 in San Jacinto County

Robert Smith ID’d as Motorcyclist Killed in San Jacinto County Crash on FM 751 and FM 429

San Jacinto County, Texas (February 14, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the motorcyclist who died in a Sunday night crash in San Jacinto County as Robert Smith, 29, of Shepherd.

The deadly crash happened at around 7:42 p.m. Sunday, February 12, at the intersection of FM 751 and FM 429, about five miles north of Quinlan.

DPS said Smith was riding a 2007 Honda CBR motorcycle southbound on the roadway while Eric Velasquez, 35, of Quinlan, was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound.

Velasquez approached the intersection of FM 751 and FM 429 and failed to yield the right of way as he was attempting to make a left turn. Smith tried to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful and crashed into the Trailblazer.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Velasquez sustained non-incapacitating injuries in the crash. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into Hunt County Detention Center.

As of Monday afternoon, Velasquez remained in custody at the jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated. His bail was set at $1,500 bond.

Further details regarding the collision were immediately provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
