Samuel Stephens Killed in Austin Bicycle Accident on Slaughter Lane

Austin, Texas (February 23, 2021) – The bicyclist who was killed earlier this month in a crash in south Austin has been identified as Samuel Stephens, 58, according to police.

The accident occurred around 5:11 p.m., on February 3, in the 3400 block of W. Slaughter Lane, just east of Brodie Lane.

Police said Stephens was riding his bicycle when he stopped on the southbound curb line. A gray 2017 Chevrolet Cruze went to cross over the northbound curb line and struck Stephens.

Stephens was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center where he died days later.

The Chevrolet driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The police are investigating the crash. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the APD’s vehicular homicide unit at (512) 974-6935.

With the surge in popularity of alternate transportation to save on fuel costs, bicycling has emerged as a new form of mobility forced to compete with motorized traffic in dangerous situations. This has resulted in many more accidents between human-powered vehicles and powerful engine-driven machines, producing tragic injuries as well as countless fatalities.
