Winters, Texas (June 3, 2023) – A man was killed Thursday afternoon in a motorcycle crash about nine miles north of Winters, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened on June 1, on US 83 near FM 1086.

DPS said 66-year-old Vernon Russel Barns of Bradshaw, Texas, was riding a 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on US 83 while 67-year-old Jerry Laverne Connor of Myra, Texas, was driving a 2012 Peterbilt towing a trailer behind Barns.

Barns was slowing down, attempting to turn left onto FM 1086, and Connor was unaware the motorcycle was slowing to turn and crossed the center line to the left. Barns was also unaware the truck was behind him and turned into the trailer.

Barns was taken to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, where he was pronounced dead.

The road conditions were clear and dry at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
