2 HPD Officer Injured in DUI Crash on Almeda Genoa Road in Houston

Two Houston Police Officers Hospitalized after Houston Crash on Almeda Genoa Road near Radio Road; Alirio Perez Arrested

Houston, Texas (May 29, 2022) – Two officers with the Houston Police Department were injured in an alleged DUI crash in southeast Houston Saturday night, authorities said.

The wreck occurred at about 10:50 p.m. Saturday, May 28, near the 8918 block of Almeda Genoa Road near Radio Road.

Officers were blocking traffic lanes on Almeda Genoa Road as crews were working on a damaged utility pole from an earlier hit and run accident.

A female officer was sitting inside her parked patrol vehicle with its emergency lights activated and another officer was standing outside the patrol car directing traffic.

Alirio Perez, 36, who was driving a silver Honda Accord eastbound on Almeda Genoa Road, ignored the blocked roadway and crashed into the patrol vehicle.

The female officer was ejected from the patrol car upon the impact. The other officer who was conducting traffic was hit by the patrol car while trying to get out of the way.

Both officers were transported to a local hospital, one with breathing difficulty and the other with minor injuries.

Perez was also hospitalized in unknown condition. Authorities later determined that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

Perez was charged with a second-offense DWI.

No further information was available.

The police are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
