Two Killed, 2 Missing and 6 Injured After Corpus Christi Pipeline Explosion at Port near Lantana and Up River Road

Corpus Christi, Texas (August 24, 2020) – Two people were killed Friday morning in a pipeline explosion that left two other people missing and six others injured at a port in Corpus Christi, according to authorities.

The explosion happened around 8:00 a.m., August 21, in the Port of Corpus Christi, near Lantana and Up River Road.

Authorities said the dredging vessel Waymon L Boyd hit a submerged natural gas pipeline, sparking an explosion. The vessel was carrying a maximum of about 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel at the time of the explosion.

Six people were taken to the hospital, and one of the victims had serious injuries.

Four other people were missing after the explosion. The bodies of two missing crew members were found on Saturday. The other two crew members have not been found.

The vessel is owned by Houston-based marine construction contractor Orion Marine Group.

The authorities are investigating the accident.
