Two Women Killed in Houston Multi-Vehicle Crash on North Freeway at Rankin

Houston, Texas (April 10, 2020) – Two women were killed, and two children were injured early Friday morning in a multi-vehicle crash in Houston, police said.

The fatal crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on the North Freeway at Rankin.

Police said a Lincoln Navigator towing a trailer was traveling southbound on the freeway when it got a flat tire. The Navigator was occupied by a father, mother and their two children, a 1-year-old and 3-year-old.

The Navigator pulled over to the side of the freeway. A woman driving a Mazda then rear-ended the trailer.

The woman got out of her Mazda, and so did the mother in the Navigator. Both women stood outside their vehicles.

A Chevy Silverado swerved to avoid the crash and hit a wall and spun into the middle lanes of the freeway.

A Chevy Suburban pulled over after the driver saw the crash, and the driver got out to help.

An Amazon Prime truck then crashed into all the vehicles and ran over the two women who were standing outside their vehicles. Both women were killed in the crash.

The driver of the Suburban jumped off the overpass when he saw the Amazon truck coming. He landed at least 10 to 15 feet below and called 911 to report the crash. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The two children in the Navigator were properly restrained. They and a man were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Investigators said the road was slick at the time of the crash.

The crash closed the freeway for several hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
