Adan Mata-Portillo Killed after Train Hits 18-Wheeler at Business 20 and County Road 135 in Barstow

Adan Mata-Portillo ID’d as Driver Killed in Barstow Train Accident at Business 20 and County Road 135

Barstow, Texas (May 11, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the driver who died after a train struck an 18-wheeler on Friday night in Barstow in Ward County as Adan Ernesto Mata-Portillo, 33, of Chihuahua, Mexico.

The deadly collision happened at around 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the intersection of Business 20 and County Road 135.

DPS said Mata-Portillo was driving a Peterbilt truck with a trailer southbound on County Road 135, approaching the railroad crossing. At the same time, an eastbound train was coming towards the railroad crossing traveling.

Reportedly, Mata-Portillo pulled out in front of the train, resulting in a collision.

Mata-Portillo died at the scene.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.
