Christopher Wayne Scates Killed in Garza County Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Highway 84
Garza County, Texas (October 12, 2020) – One person was killed, and several others were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon in Garza County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The fatal crash happened just before 3:00 p.m., October 10, on U.S. Highway 84, three miles south of Southland.
DPS said a Lincoln Navigator was traveling northbound when a tire blew out, causing the driver to apply the emergency-parking brake and lose control.
The Navigator then crossed the center median, rolled, went airborne, and landed on the roof of a southbound Chrysler Town and Country passenger van.
The Navigator continued to roll before coming to a rest.
The van driver, Christopher Wayne Scates, 35, of Snyder, was killed in the crash.
The two passengers in the van, Ashley Jeter, 25, of Snyder, and a 2-year-old boy of Sweetwater, were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The Navigator driver, Rebecca Marie Salinas, 23, of Snyder, was also taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
A 4-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Navigator was also taken to the hospital with incapacitating injuries. Two other 4-year-old boys in the Navigator were also taken to the hospital with non-incapacitating injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
