David Leon Loya ID’d as Bicyclist Killed in Heights Crash at Heights Boulevard and E 8th Street
Houston, Texas (March 8, 2019) – The bicyclist who was struck and killed by an HISD bus Thursday afternoon in the Heights has been identified as David Leon Loya, according to police.
The accident happened at about 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the intersection of East 8th Street and Heights Boulevard.
Police said Loya was peddling northbound in a bike lane on Heights Boulevard and appeared to have the right away as the bus stopped at a stop sign on East 8th Street. The bus driver continued through the intersection and went in front of the bicyclist.
Loya slid under the bus and was run over by the back axle. He died at the scene.
The driver of the bus stopped on the bus with umbrellas and sheets covering the windshield for at least three hours as police interviewed her and investigated the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
