Deputy Matt Jones Killed, Police Chief Danny Krumnow Airlifted after Riesel Crash on Highway 6

Riesel, Texas (October 12, 2019) – A Falls County Sheriff’s Deputy was killed and a police chief was injured after they were hit by a car on Friday in Riesel, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The accident happened on Friday, October 11, on State Highway 6.

Troopers said the two law enforcement officers were on the side of the highway helping another driver who had run off the roadway when an out-of-control Mazda hit them.

Deputy Matt Jones, who was assigned to the department’s K-9 division, was declared dead at the scene.

The chief of the Riesel Police Department, Danny Krumnow, was airlifted to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Mazda driver also sustained injuries in the crash.

The road was wet at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
