Devon Riddell Killed and Vasile Veverita Injured in Hartley County Two-Vehicle Crash on US 54

Hartley County, Texas (April 22, 2022) – One person was killed, and another was injured early Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Hartley County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash occurred around 4:45 a.m., April 21, on US 54, about 3.5 miles from Dalhart.

DPS said Devon Riddell, 25, of Dalhart, was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 southwest on the highway while Vasile Veverita, 62, of Rochester, New York, was driving a 2018 General Motors Box Van northeast.

For unknown reasons, the Dodge crossed over the center stripe into oncoming traffic and struck the headlight to the passenger headlight of the Box Van.

The Dodge then traveled off the roadway and into the ditch, where it rolled over multiple times, ejecting Riddell, who was not wearing a seat belt.

Riddell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Veverita was taken to a Dalhart hospital, where she was treated and released. She was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash.

The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
