Dorthy Thornton and James Branton Killed in Van Zandt County Two-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 19

Van Zandt County, Texas (December 9, 2022) – Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision in Van Zandt County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened on December 7, on State Highway 19, 2.5 miles north of Canton.

DPS said Dorthy Thornton, 91, of Edgewood, was driving northbound on the highway while James Branton, 44, of Canton, was driving southbound.

Thorton began passing several vehicles in a no-passing zone and collided head-on with Branton.

Both Thorton and Branton were pronounced dead at the scene.

No further details were provided.

The troopers are investigating the crash.
