Former Blue Bulls and Springbok Rugby Player Pedrie Wannenburg Killed After Police Chase Ends in Crash on Greenhouse Road and Little York in Houston

Harris County, Texas (April 23, 2022) – Former Blue Bulls and Springbok rugby player Pedrie Wanneburg was killed after a high-speed police pursuit ended in a multi-vehicle crash in Houston on Friday evening, authorities said.

The fatal crash happened at around 5:00 p.m., April 22, near the intersection of Greenhouse Road and Little York.

Authorities said a Harris County deputy was attempting to make a traffic stop when the teen driver fled and a pursuit began. The chase ended when the suspect struck two other cars, including Wanneburg’s vehicle.

Wannenburg and his 8-year-old son Francois were airlifted to a hospital, where Wannenburg was pronounced dead. His wife Evette and daughter Isabelle who were also on board were not injured in the crash.

Wannenburg, who was based in the USA, was coaching for Austin Elite Rugby in the North American Major League Rugby. He previously represented the South African Blue Bulls in the southern hemisphere Super 14 competition.

Wannenburg was the first player to play 99 consecutive games and 100 games for the Bulls and earned 20 caps for his country between 2001 and 2010.

The suspect, believed to be 16 years old, was driving with two other teenagers and were taken to the hospital.

No further details were provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
