James Grenwelge Killed in Taylor Two-Vehicle Crash on South Main Street

Taylor, Texas – A 71-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a wrong-way crash in Taylor, according to the police.

The fatal crash happened around 3:36 p.m., February 21, in the 1600 block of South Main Street.

Police said James Russell Grenwelge, 71, of Hearne, was driving a white 2016 Chevrolet Malibu recklessly northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway. Officers stopped the southbound traffic before Grenwelge arrived. One of the officers made a U-turn and turned on his lights and sirens to try to stop him. Grenwelge, however, did not stop, passed the officer, and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer, which was pulling a flatbed-style trailer loaded with large wooden beams. The tractor-trailer was stopped in the outside southbound lanes when Grenwelge hit it.

Grenwelge was pinned in his car and had to be extricated. He was killed in the crash.

No other details were provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
