Jose Benitez Killed, Aaron Gartman Injured in Head-On Crash on FM 616 near Vanderbilt

Jose Benitez Killed and Aaron Gartman Injured in Vanderbilt Two-Vehicle Crash on FM 616

Vanderbilt, Texas (March 29, 2022) – One person was killed, and another was injured Sunday morning in a head-on collision one mile west of Vanderbilt, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 7:30 a.m., March 27, on Farm-to-Market Road 616.

DPS said Jose Benitez, 64, of Lolita, was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue westbound on the highway while Aaron Gartman, 28, of Brazoria, was driving a 2012 Acura eastbound.

The Acura drifted into the westbound lane on a significant curve, and it crashed head-on into the Oldsmobile.

The Oldsmobile caught fire and completely burned after the crash.

Benitez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gartman was taken to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
