Officer Ruben Munoz Critically Injured in Sugar Land Three-Vehicle Crash on Southwest Freeway

Sugar Land, Texas (March 21, 2022) – Three people, including an officer, were injured early Sunday morning in a three-vehicle crash in Sugar Land, according to the police.

The crash happened around 2:00 a.m., on March 20, on the Southwest Freeway (US-59).

Police said a Sugar Land police officer was blocking a previous crash where the driver had hit some debris, lost control of his car, and hit one of the inside walls. The officer had come out of his vehicle to conduct a sobriety test. He then went back inside his patrol vehicle, which was parked in the emergency lane.

A pickup truck crashed into the patrol vehicle. A Jeep driven by a woman then crashed into the pickup truck.

The officer, Ruben Munoz, was pulled out by other officers and was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical but stable condition. He is a veteran officer who joined the Sugar Land Police Department less than a year ago after coming from the northeast area.

The Jeep driver was also airlifted to the hospital for treatment.

The pickup truck driver was also taken to the hospital by ambulance and was being investigated for potential substance use.

The crash closed the freeway for several hours.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation
