Porsha Branch, Drake, Messiah, and King Killed in Harris County Multi-Vehicle Crash on FM 2920

Harris County, Texas (March 17, 2021) – According to deputies, a mother and her three children were killed Sunday night in a fiery multi-vehicle crash in northwest Harris County.

The fatal crash happened around 8:50 p.m., March 14, on FM 2920 near Gosling Road.

Authorities said Porsha Branch, 28, was heading home from a furniture store and was stopped at a light when her vehicle was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Daniel Canada.

The impact pushed Branch’s car into a vehicle that was in front of her. A total of seven vehicles were involved in the crash.

Branch’s car caught fire after the collision.

Branch her two children, 7-month-old Drake and 5-year-old King were pronounced dead at the scene. Her other child, 2-year-old Messiah, was airlifted to Memorial Hermann in the medical center, where they later died.

Canada was taken to the hospital with bumps and bruises. A deputy had earlier stopped Canada’s vehicle for speeding just after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. He was briefly detained, and the deputy took a small amount of marijuana that was in Canada’s vehicle.

Canada was then released from custody. He continued driving and caused the fatal crash.

Canada has since been charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.

The crash remains under investigation.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.
