Russell Smallwood Killed in Castro County Two-Vehicle Crash on US 385 near Dimmitt

Castro County, Texas – According to the Texas DPS, a man was killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Castro County, approximately 9 miles north of Dimmitt. 

The fatal crash happened around 1:45 p.m., February 15, on US 385.

DPS said a 2021 GMC Sierra towing a trailer was traveling northbound while a 2016 Ford F450 pickup also towing a trailer was traveling southbound.

For unknown reasons, the Ford traveled into the northbound lane and sideswiped the GMC.

The GMC came to a rest jackknifed in the northbound lane while the Ford came to a rest in the ditch west of the road.

The GMC driver, 45-year-old Tranquilino Garza of Hereford, was uninjured in the crash.

The Ford driver, 61-year-old Russell Smallwood of Lubbock, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Texas Highway Troopers are investigating the crash.
