Two Police Officers Seriously Injured in Amarillo Car Crash on Amarillo Boulevard; Angelo Ramos Arrested

Amarillo, Texas (January 1, 2021) – Two APD officers were seriously injured early Friday morning in a DUI crash in Amarillo, according to the police.

The crash happened around 2:59 a.m. on Amarillo Boulevard at Madison.

Police said two marked patrol units, each occupied by a single officer, were being used to block the westbound lanes of Amarillo Boulevard at Madison for a fire.

Angelo Ramos, 34, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer westbound and struck the first police car on the driver’s side. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to hit a Police Ford Explorer patrol unit.

Both officers were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Ramos was taken to the hospital and was medically cleared and then booked into Potter County Detention Center for intoxication assault.

Officers said alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department is investigating the crash.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct.

If you have been injured because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a  personal injury action against the drunk driver.
