Verna Harris Killed, Brendan Durkin Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 271 in Upshur County

Verna Harris Killed and Brendan Durkin Injured in Upshur County Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 271

Upshur County, Texas (February 2, 2022) – One person was killed, and another was injured Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle crash in Upshur County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash occurred around 5:35 p.m., February 1, on Highway 271, just south of Gilmer.

DPS said Brendan Durkin, 53, of Gilmer, was driving a van northbound on the highway behind a pickup truck driven by Verna Harris, 49, also of Gilmer.

The pickup slowed to turn left into a private drive on the westbound side. Durkin failed to control speed and struck the pickup.

Harris was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Durkin was taken to a Tyler hospital in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
