Victoria McKenzie Killed, Roland Chatham and Manual Avila Injured in Crash at FM 769 and SH 83 in Yoakum County

Yoakum County, Texas – One person was killed and two others were injured Friday morning in a three-vehicle crash in Yoakum County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The fatal crash happened just after 7:00 a.m., April 12, at the intersection of FM 769 and SH 83, west of Denver City.

DPS said Victoria McKenzie, 38, was driving southbound on FM 769 approaching the intersection while Roland Chatham, 47, was driving a Peterbilt truck tractor towing a trailer westbound on SH 83.

McKenzie disregarded the stop sign at the intersection and hit the passenger’s side of the Peterbilt truck, causing the vehicle to veer into the eastbound lane of SH 83.

The Peterbilt became separated from the trailer and struck a third vehicle driven by Manual Avila, 34.

McKenzie was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chatham and Avila were taken to Yoakum County Hospital for treatment.

All drivers were wearing seatbelts and the road conditions were clear and dry at the time of the crash.

The DPS is investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
