Two Killed in Bastrop County School Bus Crash on Highway 21

Bastrop County, Texas – Two people, including a boy, were killed and several other people were injured Friday afternoon in a crash involving a school bus in Bastrop County, according to officials.

The fatal crash happened around 2:00 p.m., March 22, on Highway 21, about 50 miles east of Austin.

Officials said a school bus, carrying more than three dozen pre-K students, was traveling westbound when a concrete truck veered into the westbound lane and hit the bus. The truck also hit a Dodge Charger that had been traveling behind the bus. The bus rolled over after the crash.

A boy on the bus and a person in the Dodge were killed in the crash. Their identities have not been released.

Four other people were airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. Six other people were taken to the hospital by ground ambulance with potentially serious injuries.

The Hays Consolidated Independent School District said in a statement that the bus was carrying Tom Green Elementary pre-K students returning from a field trip to the Capital of Texas Zoo in Cedar Creek, about 22 miles southeast of Austin. 44 students and 11 adults were on the bus at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
