Andrew Cervantes Killed in Kermit Two-Vehicle Crash on State Highway 302

Kermit, Texas (June 20, 2023) – One person was killed, and another was injured Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash about five miles west of Kermit, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 5:30 a.m., June 17, on State Highway 302.

DPS said Ivan Gonzalez-Barbosa, 55, of Kermit, was driving a 2019 Peterbilt truck towing a trailer eastbound on the highway while Andrew Cervantes, 24, of La Joya, was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westbound.

Cervantes failed to drive in a single lane, veered into the eastbound lanes, and struck Gonzalez-Barbosa. The Silverado then caught fire, and Cervantes was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Gonzalez-Barbosa was taken to Winkler County Hospital, where he was treated and released. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
