Benjamin Caballero ID’d as 1 of 2 Victims Killed in Cameron County Crash on FM 506

Cameron County, Texas (April 21, 2022) – One of the two people who died Wednesday evening following a wrong-way head-on crash in Cameron County has been identified as Benjamin Caballero, 36, of Weslaco.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the deadly crash happened at about 5:49 p.m. on April 20 on FM 506, just south of the Cameron and Willacy County line.

The DPS said Caballero was driving a white Chevrolet Spark northbound on FM 506 on the wrong side of the road in a no-passing zone when he collided head-on with a silver Chevrolet Camaro.

Caballero and one of his passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A second passenger, described as a minor, suffered head injuries and was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Camaro sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
