Katelyn Beth Smoot, James Edward Echols, and Billy Ray Herron Killed in Montague County Two-Vehicle Crash on US 81

Montague County, Texas (June 13, 2023) – Three people were killed early Saturday morning in a fiery two-vehicle crash in Montague County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 5:10 a.m., June 10, on U.S. Highway 81, about two miles north of Ringgold.

DPS said a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling northbound on the highway while a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup was traveling southbound.

The Silverado drove across the center stripe into the southbound lane and crashed into the Ford.

The Ford became engulfed in flames following the collision.

The Silverado driver, Katelyn Beth Smoot, 32, of Teral, Oklahoma, was pronounced dead at the scene. Smoot was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The Ford driver, James Edward Echols, 78, and his passenger, Billy Ray Herron, 78, both from Teral, Oklahoma, were also pronounced dead at the scene.

No further information was available.

The crash remains under investigation.
