Man Killed in DWI Crash on I-45 in SE Houston; Jose Fernandez Arrested

Man Killed in SE Houston DWI Crash on Interstate 45; Jose Fernandez Arrested

Houston, Texas (March 16, 2022) – One person was killed, and a man has been arrested following a Monday morning DWI crash in southeast Houston, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 2:00 a.m., March 14, on Interstate 45 (Gulf Freeway) near Scott Street.

Authorities said a 29-year-old man was driving a Toyota Corolla the wrong way on the freeway when he struck another car and came to a rest. No one was injured in that crash. 

Moments later, a black Buick Regal driven by Jose Manuel Fernandez Ortiz, 28, struck the disabled Toyota and the driver who was standing on the main lanes of the freeway. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Ortiz was arrested and has been charged with DWI. He was being held on $10,000 bail.

An investigation is underway.
