Tamara Jo Mathis Hit, Killed by School Bus on SH 158 in Coke County

Tamara Jo Mathis Killed in Coke County Pedestrian Accident on State Highway 158

Coke County, Texas (October 20, 2023) – A woman was fatally hit by a school bus Thursday morning in Coke County, according to the Texas DPS.

The deadly accident happened on October 19, on State Highway 158.

DPS said a Blue Bird bus, driven by Barbra Ann Sparks of Robert Lee, was traveling westbound on the highway. She saw a vehicle coming from behind the bus and moved over to the westbound shoulder of the road to let it pass. Tamara Jo Mathis, 35, of Winters, was walking westbound on the shoulder of the highway with a container of gasoline.

Sparks did not see Mathis until the bus had moved onto the shoulder and struck her.

Mathis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sparks was taken to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo with minor injuries. 

The DPS is investigating the crash.
