Goodnight, Texas (September 12, 2019) – One person was killed, and another was severely injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon near Goodnight, according to a local news release.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, September 11, on US 287.

DPS said a tractor-trailer, driven by Galyean Swayer, 22, of Childress, was heading eastbound on the highway when it rear-ended an SUV driven by James Powell, 58, of Clarendon. The impact caused the SUV to spin out of control and move into the center median. The SUV then hit the far slope of the median and rotated once more before coming to rest. The semi crossed over the center median, jackknifed and came to rest across the westbound lanes.

Tojuanna Pierce, 60, of Clarendon, who was a passenger in the SUV, was ejected. Pierce was declared dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Powell was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital with severe injuries.

Sawyer was uninjured in the crash.
