Houston, Texas (January 26, 2022) – A 75-year-old man was killed on December 26 after his car was struck by an HPD vehicle in NW Houston, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened around noon in the 4600 block of North Shepherd Drive at the intersection of Thornton Road.

Authorities said Officer Christopher Cabrera was driving his patrol SUV northbound on Shepherd Drive at an unsafe speed when he crashed into the side of a Cadillac CTS, which was traveling southbound and was attempting to turn eastbound across the northbound lanes. Cabrera was not en route to a call or using emergency equipment at the time of the crash.

The Cadillac driver, Charles Payne, 75, was pinned in the wreckage. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Cabrera was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He has since been relieved of duty pending the outcome of a criminal investigation into the crash. He could face a charge ranging between manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.

An investigation is underway.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation
