Ginger Mattox Killed in Austin Pedestrian Accident at U.S. 183 and Pond Springs Road; Gary Joseph Brauneis Charged

Austin, Texas (May 27, 2020) – A woman was fatally hit by an intoxicated driver Thursday night in Northwest Austin, according to police.

The accident occurred around 10:36 p.m. May 21, at the intersection of U.S. 183 and Pond Springs Road.

Police said 27-year-old Gary Joseph Brauneis was driving a gray 2010 Mazda M3i on the northbound service road of U.S. 183 when he rear-ended a white 2014 GMC pickup truck that was stopped at the red light on Pond Springs Road.

The impact pushed the GMC into the intersection while the Mazda continued northbound into the sidewalk, where it hit 30-year-old Ginger Mattox and then crashed into a nearby building.

Mattox was taken to St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center, where she later died.

The GMC driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Brauneis was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and intoxication manslaughter. He was booked into the Williamson County Jail.

An investigation into the crash is underway. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call police investigators at 512-974-8544. Tipsters also can use the Austin PD app.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ginger Mattox.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
