Julian Espino-Mendoza Killed in Winkler County Two-Vehicle Crash on SH 302

Winkler County, Texas (January 28, 2022) – One person was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Winkler County, according to the DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 7:40 a.m., January 27, on State Highway 302, about five miles east of Kermit.

DPS said Julian Espino-Mendoza, 30, of Mexico, was driving a semi-truck eastbound on the highway when a sand hauler pulled out in front of him from Black Mountain Sand Plant, resulting in a collision.

The sand hauler’s trailer was partially inside Espino-Mendoza’s cab after the crash.

Espino-Mendoza was trapped inside his truck and had to be extricated. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The conditions were foggy along the highway at the time of the crash.

The crash closed the highway for several hours.

The crash remains under investigation.
