Rebecca Campa, Reuben Vasquez Injured in Fatal Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 45 in Wilmer

14-Year-Old Rebecca Campa and 15-Year-Old Reuben Vasquez ID’d as 2 Students Injured in Wilmer Car Crash on Interstate 45 near Mars Road

Wilmer, Texas (May 24, 2022) – The family has identified the two Palestine ISD students who were injured after being involved in a deadly car crash Sunday night in Wilmer as Rebecca Campa, 14, and her cousin Reuben Vasquez, 15.

The fatal crash occurred around 11:45 p.m., May 22, on Interstate 45, just south of Mars Road.

Police said a minivan was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the interstate when it crashed head-on into a southbound vehicle.

The driver of the southbound vehicle, 28-year-old Michael Coyne, a teacher and coach at Palestine Junior High, was returning to Palestine after taking the children to the Mavericks playoff game when the crash happened. He was killed in the crash.

Coyne’s two passengers, Campa and Vasquez, were taken to Baylor Hospital with major injuries. Both are still in intensive care, but both are expected to recover.

The minivan driver, 33-year-old Francisca Fuentes, and her two juvenile passengers, 2-year-old Gabriela Fuentes and 1-year-old Justino Jaimes, were pronounced dead at the scene.

No other details were provided.

The police are investigating the crash.
