Steven Stotts Killed, John Zaverl, Michael Mizzelle, and Young Mo Kang Injured in Gregg County Truck Crash on Interstate 20

Gregg County, Texas (March 9, 2022) – One person was killed, and three others were injured Tuesday morning in a fiery truck crash in Gregg County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 4:25 a.m., March 8, on Interstate-20, about a half-mile west of Longview.

DPS said a hauler for David Gilliland Racing’s ARCA team was headed to Phoenix for Friday night’s ARCA Menards Series race at Phoenix Raceway and was heading westbound on the interstate.

A Honda Passport towing a small trailer was also traveling westbound in the outside lane of the interstate and was being approached by the hauler from behind.

The hauler driver, 54-year-old Steven Stotts of Valley Head, West Virginia, failed to control his speed and struck the trailer that was being towed by the Honda.

The impact caused the Honda to roll onto its side into the center median while the trailer attached to it vaulted into the eastbound lanes. The hauler rolled over into the median and caught fire.

Stotts was pronounced dead at the scene. His two passengers, John Zaverl, 38, and Michael Mizzelle, 45, were taken to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, where they were treated and released.

The Honda driver, Young Mo Kang, 63, was taken to Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview in stable condition.

The weather conditions were clear, and road conditions were dry at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation
