Hawley, Texas (October 25, 2023) – The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the man who died following a traffic collision Monday evening at an intersection north of Hawley as Kevin Sallas, 49, of Abilene.

The deadly crash happened at about 6:00 p.m. Monday, October 23 at the intersection of State Highway 92 and FM 1661, just 1 mile north of Hawley.

DPS said a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Sallas, was heading southbound on FM 1661, approaching the intersection of State Highway 92 controlled by stop signs for south and north traffic while a 2023 Kenworth truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling westbound on State Highway 92 approaching the intersection with FM 1661.

Sallas failed to yield the right of way to the Kenworth. Unfortunately, the Kenworth hit the Chevy.

Sallas was pronounced dead on the scene. The truck driver, a 38-year-old man from Tallassee, AL, was not injured.

The road was wet due to the rain and the speed limit is posted at 75 mph.

No other details about the crash were immediately provided.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
