Jay Simon Mejia Killed in San Antonio Car Crash on Loop 410 at Roosevelt Road

San Antonio, Texas (December 25, 2020) – Two people were killed early Thursday morning in a wrong-way crash in San Antonio’s South Side, according to police.

The deadly crash happened around 2:45 a.m., December 24, in the eastbound main lanes of Loop 410 at Roosevelt Road.

Police said a silver 2014 Mazda was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when a silver compact car swerved to miss it and rear-ended an 18-wheeler. The compact car became wedged under the 18-wheeler, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

The wrong-way driver continued traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and crashed into a pickup truck at about 2:48 a.m. The pickup driver, Jay Simon Mejia, 33, was killed in the crash.

The wrong-way driver and his passenger exited the vehicle, which then burst into flames.

The wrong-way driver and the passenger were taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was charged with Intoxication Manslaughter.

The crash closed the eastbound lanes of Loop 410, and traffic was diverted onto the access road.

The crash remains under investigation.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
